Daniil Medvedev admitted belief in Australian Open victory but wouldn't be disappointed if he failed to

Speaking to the media the world nr. 4 he admitted:
"[A] good Australian Open is to win it. But if you ask me what I'm going to be happy about, it always depends of course who you play, who you lose to." He continued: "But I would say I will be happy with quarters. As I always say, for me the first goal is to win it step by step. If I'm in [the] quarters, I'm not going to be there and say, ‘Okay, I've done my goal, it's enough for this tournament.’ Any tournament I play, I want to win it."
He is by many considered the biggest favourite outside of the top 3. During his breakout 2019 campaign he racked up Tour-high 59 wins along with 9 finals out of which one was the US Open. He doesn't allow his newfound success to change him off the court as he pointed out:
"I just try to be the same with my close friends, my family. I don't change. I still play PlayStation, watch some series, cinemas, go out to dinner. That's how you stay normal."
He spoke about competing with legends like Federer or Nadal, players he still hasn't beaten:
"The more times you play them, the more you know where you are comparing to them." He also spoke about his first-round matchup against Francis Tiafoe: "It’s a great matchup. He was in quarters here last year, again super motivated. But I think it's going to be a great match. Of course, I want to do my best to win it. Hopefully, I can show some good tennis. Like this, I'm going to have my chances."
How far can Medvedev go and whether he will exceed his realistic goal of quarters remains to be seen. Be with us as we will have all the coverage of the grand slam which starts in two days.
