A brilliant tie match between Russia and Italy ended with a great doubles match where Medvedev and Safiullin powered Russia past Berrettini and Sinner into the semifinals.
A place in the semifinal will be occupied by Russia who defeated Italy in a very close match at the
ATP Cup. All three matches were fairly close but ultimately it was Russia who won two of them securing themselves a place in the semifinal. In the first one, Jannik Sinner played a very good match to overcome an inspired Safiullin and secure the first point for Italy.
In the 2nd one, Medvedev scored a huge win for Russia by beating Berrettini in three sets. The Italian played a very good match but ultimately lost out 6-3 in the 3rd set. So the tie was to be decided by a doubles match and it was a very fun one. All four players took to the courts once more and early on the Italians were on top. Playing some solid tennis they took the first set with 7-5.
In the 2nd set, it was the Russians who proved better after Medvedev stepped up considerably. Playing some amazing defensive tennis he was able to will his team to a 6-4 2nd set victory. In the final set, we saw a match tiebreak, and once again it was Medvedev who would not be denied. He was everywhere on the court and the Italians were simply left scratching their head.
A 10-5 finish in the 3rd set match tiebreak for Russia who defeats Italy 2-1 and moves on to the semifinals of the event.
