Russia’s young tennis sensation Mirra Andreeva has produced a brilliant display and stunned the former world number one Poland’s Iga Swiatek in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship 2025.
The 17-year-old, who is already regarded as the one for the future, defeated the current world number two in the quarterfinal of the event in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday.
Before coming into the match, the two only faced each other once, which was in the quarterfinal of the Cincinnati Open last year, where Swiatek came out on top with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. However, on Sunday, Andreeva was unstoppable against the five-time Grand Slam winner and secured the contest in straight sets.
During the contest, Andreeva produced 10 aces. In comparison, her opponent could not produce a single ace. She converted four break points as well, three more than Swiatek. Andreeva won 67 percent service points well. In comparison, the Warsaw-born star won just 49 percent points while serving.
The result will be another blow for Swiatek, who is regarded as one of the best players currently playing in women's tennis in the singles category, along with the likes of Aryna Sabalenka. The five-time Grand Slam winner is still waiting for her first title in 2025. She appeared in the Australian Open, where her journey ended after losing in the semifinal to America’s Madison Keys with a score of 5-7, 6-1, 7-6. Before coming to Dubai, Swiatek participated in the Qatar Open, where she once again lost in the semifinal, this time to Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-1. It was Swiatek’s fifth consecutive defeat against Ostapenko in a professional defeat.
On the other hand, the victory will be one to remember for Andreeva, who, with that win, cemented her place in the semifinal of an ATP 1000 event for the first time in her young career.
