Garbine Muguruza lost in the opening round of the
Australian Open and it continued a terrible trend for her that started last year, a year that finished with a 12-17 record for her.
Muguruza's 2022 year was a terrible one where she struggled to beat any player, not just the top players. It didn't start much better as she played three events so far and went 0-3. After that start, Muguruza is set to rethink her 2023 calendar opting to be humble in accordance with her ranking which is not high at the moment (73).
She said:
"I will have to make a proper calendar with my ranking. I'll try to play the best tournaments too but when I can't I'll look at other lesser ones. I will value these type of tournaments. It's time to be humble."
She will probably play a lot of smaller events in order to gain some points and rebuild her confidence. Talking about what is going wrong for her, Muguruza said:
“I think it has been a mixture of tension and fatigue. Physically I have noticed a downturn. The truth is that the key moments are costing me. I start playing well and then maybe I don't show the highest level. It is necessary to be able to close these types of moments decisively.”
