Former World No.1
Andy Murray made his singles return to professional tennis on Monday night, defeating veteran
Richard Gasquet in the first round at the Western & Southern Open.
The Brit emerged with a 6-4 6-4 victory over his French opponent, requiring an hour and 50 minutes to secure the win. Murray had not competed in any singles event since Wimbledon, although he did represent Great Britain in the men's doubles event at the Olympics.
Perhaps this tactic helped the 34-year old preserve his body, as he looked spry when battling Gasquet on Center Court. The three-time Grand Slam winner chased down every ball, producing some spectacular shots and displaying the defense for which he is well known. Furthermore, Murray hit an impressive 14 aces, while winning 29 of 36 points on his first serve.
Currently ranked at World No.105, Murray will face the winner between ninth seed
Hubert Hurkacz and Spaniard
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
