Rafael Nadal has had unbelievable success at the Monte Carlo Masters but tournament director Zeljko Franulovic was more astonished with his
Australian Open triumph.
Nadal secured his 21st grand slam trophy in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago and it came after Nadal suffered a foot injury that ruled him out for five months. As he was staging his return, the Spaniard then contracted Covid-19 which heavily hampered his Melbourne Park preparations. Despite all of that he was able to secure the final and overturn a 2-0 deficit to win the trophy.
Monte Carlo tournament director Zeljko Franulovic was amazed by the achievement saying:
"What Rafael Nadal did in Australia, to me, is worthy of a Netflix movie. I’ve never seen that. It is something superhuman. Nadal has extraordinary mental strength."
Franulovic further said:
“We must not forget Daniil [Medvedev] who had an equally incredible match. It takes two for [a match like that]. For me, there is no need to even announce [that Nadal will be playing at the 2022
Monte-Carlo Masters]. He will be there, it is one of his favourite tournaments and ideal in his preparation for Roland Garros. He will come here to win, as always, with his 11 titles”
