Former world number one
Andy Murray posted a hilarious statement
after his professional tennis career ended. The 37-year-old is often
regarded as the greatest British player in the history of men’s tennis in the
Open era in the singles category.
Murray’s career finally ended on Thursday as he and
his partner Dan Evans lost in the quarterfinal in the doubles category in
straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4. The Glasgow-born star, in a post on his
official account on the social media platform X — previously known as Twitter —
wrote a hilarious message showing exactly why he is loved by tennis fans in the
world. “Never even liked tennis,” he wrote.
Despite his on-field achievements, Murray’s career has been marred
because of injuries. For this reason, he announced his retirement from professional tennis back in 2018, just after the Australian Open. However, he returned to the court soon after and continued to play at the
highest level for many years. This year, the former world number one announced
that he will retire from the sport after playing Wimbledon on home soil and the
Paris Olympics.
However, the ideal farewell plan was affected after Murray
suffered a back injury during the Queen’s ATP Championship, which forced him to
undergo an injury as well. After that surgery, the three-time Grand Slam winner
withdrew from the singles category. He ended up playing in the doubles category
but his journey with his brother Jamie was short-lived as they suffered a
defeat in the opening round.
Murray finished his career with three Grand Slam titles to
his name. He won Wimbledon twice — in 2013 and 2016 — and the US Open in 2012.
He also finished as the runner-up at the Australian Open five
times — in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016. Murray also won two Olympic gold
medals for his country, both of which came in the singles category.
