Australia’s
Nick Kyrgios is of the opinion that there should
be a mixed doubles category in the 1000 Masters event instead of men’s doubles.
The 29-year-old is regarded as one of the most outspoken players currently
playing in men’s tennis.
Because of this, Kyrgios has been involved in some
controversies, on and off the field. The former world number 13, who is
currently spending time on the sidelines recovering from a serious injury, was
recently quoted in a report in which he talked in detail about how the Masters
event needs a mixed doubles event more than men’s doubles.
The Canberra-born was of the opinion that a Masters event would
be beneficial if there are mixed doubles than men’s doubles. The 2022 Wimbledon
runner-up further went on talk about his experience of playing alongside the
likes of former world number ones Serena and Venus Williams. He also highlighted
that there are there are a lot of good players whom he would like to play with if
he ever gets a chance to play in the mixed doubles category.
"I would do mixed doubles at Masters events, because in
what other sport can you get your favorite female athlete and your favorite
male athlete competing on the same side of the net for good prize money? It's
not not possible,” he said. “You don't see it in any other sport. So Masters
events, instead of men's doubles or women's doubles, there should be mixed
doubles. There's plenty of good players I'd love to play with, past and
present. I've had the honor of playing with Serena and Venus. I would have
liked to play with them. I would have loved to have played with Ash Barty at
some stage. I think she, by far, was one of the most talented female players to
ever play the game. I think we would have done some damage on the court.”
