Nick
Kyrgios once again took aim at
Jannik Sinner after the Italian, world No. 1,
secured his 7th title of the season by defeating
Novak Djokovic in straight
sets at the
Shanghai Masters, continuing his dominance in 2024.
However,
Sinner's dream year has not been without controversy. In August, just before
the US Open, the 23-year-old revealed he had tested positive for doping earlier
in the year at Indian Wells. In August, the ITIA cleared him of any wrongdoing
after an investigation, but many still believe Sinner received special
treatment.
In similar
cases, players are usually suspended as soon as a positive test is confirmed,
pending the investigation. Yet, Sinner remained on the tour without anyone
knowing about his positive doping result.
Nick
Kyrgios has been one of Sinner’s most vocal critics, repeatedly taking to
social media to slam the Italian and questioning why he wasn’t suspended. After
Sinner’s victory over Djokovic, Kyrgios had the perfect opportunity to
reiterate his criticism when a social media user reignited the discussion about
Sinner.
“Every
player beaten by Jannik Sinner must be thinking the same thing. This f****r
shouldn’t even be on the court right now,” the user wrote, to which Nick
Kyrgios responded: “Yep. Ridiculous lol.”
Kyrgios
remains sidelined from the tour due to recurring injuries over the past two
years, having played just one match in that time. The former Wimbledon
runner-up is aiming for a return to the courts at the 2025 Australian Open.
