Novak Djokovic landed in Melbourne recently but he has not been allowed to enter the country due to a faulty visa.
In a very strange sequence of events, the world number one has not been allowed entry into Australia at the moment as his team applied for the wrong visa. Apparently, Djokovic's team applied the Serbian for a type of visa that does not allow players to enter the country with a medical exemption rendering it useless. The border police then contacted the state government after realizing Djokovic’s team had submitted the wrong type of visa.
Federal authorities contacted Victorian departmental officials asking them to formally support his application. Essentially the Serbian is now stuck at the Melbourne airport until this issue is resolved. There is no official information on whether Djokovic can or will apply for a different visa and whether he would get it.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Morrison confirmed that Djokovic will have to prove to authorities why he was unable to get vaccinated, and only if he does, he would be allowed in the country. Meanwhile, government Minister Jaala Pulford wrote on Twitter:
"Update on
#AusOpen2022…
The Federal Government has asked if we will support Novak Djokovic’s visa application to enter Australia.
We will not be providing Novak Djokovic with individual visa application support to participate in the 2022
Australian Open Grand Slam."
The situation is developing with a lot of information coming out at the moment. We will update you as the story unfolds. Stay Tuned.
