Italian media has taken a massive U-turn
about their projection of young tennis star
Jannik Sinner. The 22-year-old is
often regarded as one of the most highly-rated players currently playing in the
men’s singles category alongside Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and America’s Ben
Shelton.
In the past, Italian media was
extremely critical of Sinner’s achievements on the court but that has dramatically
changed after his heroics in the recent past, especially in the recently concluded
Davis Cup.
Italian newspaper Sportweek, which
not so long ago, was highly critical of Sinner, recently posted a headline
stating: “Jannik brought Italy to the top of the world rankings & rekindled
his passion, now children dream of becoming like him.”
The world number four played a key
role in helping Italy win the Davis Cup for the first time in more than four
decades as they defeated Australia in the final with a score of 2-0.
In the semifinal, Italy was on the
verge of a knockout against Serbia but it was Sinner who managed to save three
match points to defeat the current world number one Novak Djokovic with a score
of 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.
That result turned the whole tie upside
down as Italy not only went on to defeat Serbia but also secured a thumping win
in the final against Australia.
