Although Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini did not play for his home nation during their Davis Cup victory, compatriot Jannik Sinner believes the Wimbledon finalist's name should be engraved on the trophy.
Sinner led Italy to a historic Davis Cup triumph, defeating World No.1 Novak Djokovic in singles and doubles en route to the title. Berrettini did not compete for Italy during the Finals, but has been a staple on Italy's team in the past.
Despite not being cleared to compete at this year's event, Berrettini was present at all of Italy's matches. The former World No.6 was engaged from the sidelines, cheering his team on and yelling words of encouragement during the entire event. Sinner believes Berrettini's support was vital to their victory, adding he had done enough to have his name engraved on the trophy.
"Seeing the players on the bench when you're playing, asking Berrettini or others their point of view as players is nice," said Sinner. "Winning a Davis Cup like this is special. I want to say that seeing Matteo there was very nice. He's not inside with his name on the cup, but if it could be done in some way we all would like him to be there."
