Fans on social media lambasted world number two Alexander Zverev after his comments about his defeat in the final of the Australian Open. The 27-year-old had a rough day in the grand finale on Sunday in Melbourne, where he came second best against the reigning world number one Jannik Sinner, who lifted the title in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.
It was a tough day at the office for the current world number three as it was the third time he ended on the losing side in the final of a major competition. In 2020, he finished as the runner-up at the US Open after losing to Dominic Thiem in a five-set thriller with a score of 2–6, 4–6, 6–4, 6–3, 7–6. Four years later, in 2024, Zverev once again lost in the final of a Grand Slam, this time to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, who lifted the French Open after winning an epic five-set encounter with a score of 6–3, 2–6, 5–7, 6–1, 6–2.
Talking after the final, Zverev made a bold comment by stating that he does not want to finish his career as the best player ever to not win a Grand Slam. “I don’t want to end my career as the best player of all time to never win a Grand Slam, that’s for sure,” he said. That comment did not go down well with the fans on social media, who reminded Zverev that there have been plenty of great players who never won a major title in their respective careers.
“The best player of all time??? On what earth does he live where someone thinks he's the best lol,” one fan wrote. “Don't worry sacha, you won't. Ferrer,Tsonga,Berdych were way better players than you are,” another one commented. "There is an argument that he is the most accomplished Slamless player, but there were many better players (in terms of peak level/consistency) who never won one," another fan highlighted the weakness in Zverev’s argument.
