The 2nd seed Roberto Bautista Agut is out of the Generali Open in Kitzbuhel as he lost to compatriot Pedro Martinez in three sets.
It was a long and gruelling battle and ultimately Bautista Agut was not able to pull out the match. The Spaniard is out of form for a long time now only having a mild resurrection at Wimbledon. His slide continued in Kitzbuhel as he suffered another loss to an unseeded player.
Last week he lost to Rinderknech who was out of the top 100. In today's match, Bautista Agut resorted to being on the defensive allowing Martinez to take the initiative. That approach did not yield results as he lost the opening set with 6-4.
Things changed in the 2nd set as he became more aggressive. He took an early 3-1 lead but failed to hold onto it. Then he broke Martinez at the perfect time serving for the set at 5-3 but once again failed to convert it. Proving third luck is the charm he finally won the set in the tiebreak.
The 3rd set featured a lengthy and gruelling battle as both players tapped into their reserves for this one. Bautista Agut did not play as good as in the 2nd set and that came back to bite him very late in the match. At 5-6, he allowed three break points to Martinez and he used it.
