Italian tennis legend Nicola Pientrangeli called Berrettini's decision to travel to Malaga a noble gesture after an injury prevented him from playing.
Matteo Berrettini was unable to play for Italy due to a foot injury but he travelled to Malaga to be with the team. The injury occurred at the Naples event earlier this year where he reached the final losing to Musetti in straight sets.
It was an annoyance for Berrettini who was hoping to finish the season on a high note but injury struck once more, just like last year. It's generally been an injury-ridden season for him but that hasn't stopped him from being there with the team.
On that, Pietrangeli said:
"It's a noble gesture, of belonging to the team. In Bologna, we saw how united they are. His presence will be essential. Tennis players love being in a team, even if they have very few opportunities during the season."
Berrettini played for Italy during the qualifiers as did Sinner with both proving crucial for securing the final.s Both however are injured right now. Pietrangeli added that he thought Italy would surely play the finals:
"Up until a few weeks ago I thought the 'final' would be the fourth between Italy and the United States. At this point the Americans are favourites, followed by Canada."
