"Pretty painful right now": Wrist injury casts doubt about Sebastian Korda's participation in Novak Djokovic clash at Miami Open

America’s Sebastian Korda is uncertain about playing in the quarterfinal of the Miami Open. The 24-year-old cemented his spot in the last eight of the ongoing ATP 1000 event in Miami after beating veteran French tennis star Gael Monfils in the round of 16 with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

However, while doing that, Korda suffered a wrist injury, which put his participation in the mega-event's quarterfinal in doubt. The Florida-born player was quoted in a report by Tennis 365, where he stated that things would become clearer on Wednesday and also admitted that a lot of work needs to be done in the off day to ensure that he will be fit enough to take the court on Thursday.

“It’s [the wrist] pretty painful right now, we’ll see how it goes tomorrow,” he said. “Will do a lot of work with my physio now, we’ll see how it is tomorrow. I got pretty negative [after the injury]. Just kind of had to refocus and get positive again. It’s great [to be into his fourth Masters 1000 quarter-final]. I haven’t played a lot of tournaments this year, hopefully I can play some good tennis and see where it takes me.”

That win sets him up for a mouthwatering last-eight clash against the former world number one Serbia’s Novak Djokovic. The 37-year-old, who is regarded as the greatest player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open era, having won as many as 24 Grand Slam titles, secured his spot in the quarterfinal of the Miami Open after beating Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in the round of 16 in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2. It will be only the second meeting between the two players in professional tennis. In the only previous meeting, which was in the final of an ATP event in Adelaide in 2023, it was Djokovic who came out in top with a score of 6-7, 7-6, 6-4.
