American Alison Riske executed a furious second-round comeback win on home soil Friday, upsetting No.8 seed Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain 0-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Despite being a three setter the match lasted only 91 minutes as the pace of play was very quick and neither player was interested in playing long rallies. Muguruza was superb early on blowing her opponent away with a bagel but Riske came back to win 12 of the last 13 games played. The manner of the comeback left Riske quite proud of it after:
"This was a much more rewarding win in the fashion that I did it, over had it been an easy two-setter. I could have easily checked out and been out of there in 30 minutes, really. So I am very proud of that fact. ... It's never over till it's over."
Muguruza was left perplexed by the outcome of the match not being able to believe what had happened. The truth of the matter is that Riske smashed Muguruza in the final two set and deservedly moved on to the next round.
