Opening up the European Clay Court season see a double dose of tournaments with the Bastad Open being joined by Swiss Open Gstaad.
As ever, TennisUpToDate previews proceedings with attention soon turning from Wimbledon back to the surface that dominated pre SW19.

Wawrinka and Thiem joined by Bautista Agut, Kecmanovic and Fils among others

Two former Grand Slam champions technically lead the field not ranking but by status at Swiss Open Gstaad.
Dominic Thiem has spent most of the past few months playing on clay with only the excursion to Wimbledon to lose a five-set clash with Stefanos Tsitsipas his only really grass tournament.
He returns immediately to clay and will play in Gstaad this next week. While Wawrinka had a good start to Wimbledon but lost to Novak Djokovic on a mission who lost in the Wimbledon final in the end. A good omen for Wawrinka form wise.
Top seed is Roberto Bautista Agut, while Miomir Kecmanovic, Lorenzo Sonego and Yannick Hanfmann also lead the field based off rankings.
Young Frenchman, Arthur Fils who also impressed on clay in Roland Garros warm-ups will also return to the surface this next week in Gstaad.
Defending champion is Casper Ruud. But he has decided to play at Bastad Open in the next week instead over in Sweden instead of heading to Switzerland.
So his tour of European Clay Court will not begin in Gstaad, but for Fils and others, that may begin.
