Former British player
Laura Robson has picked spain’s Carlos
Alcaraz as the best men’s player in 2024. The 21-year-old is already regarded
as one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles
category along with the likes of Italy’s
Jannik Sinner.
The reigning world number three has had an impressive season
where he lifted two out of the four Grand Slams. He first lifted the French
Open after beating Alexander Zverev of Germany in the final in a five-set
thriller with a score of 6–3, 2–6, 5–7, 6–1, 6–2. He then lifted the Wimbledon
title for the second time in two years as he defeated the former world number
one Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-2,
6-2, 7-6.
Alcaraz then went on to win a silver medal for his country
in the Paris Olympics. He lost in the final of the singles category event to
Djokovic in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6. However, from there
on, things did not go as planned as Alcaraz finished the year as the world
number three with more than 3,000 points behind Sinner. The four-time Grand
Slam winner’s last outing this year came in the ATP Finals where he failed to
make it to semifinals after losing two out of three matches in the group stage.
Despite all of that, former British player Robson has picked
the young Spaniard ahead of Sinner as the best men’s player in 2024. The
30-year-old was of the opinion that Alcaraz’s performances in the summer, where
he won two back-to-back Grand Slams, was good enough for him to become the men’s
player in 2024. “I've gone for Alcaraz,” she said while talking to Sky Sports. “Purely
based on the summer he had by winning the French Open and Wimbledon. Then
straight after that, he got to the Olympic final and he was very close to
coming home with a gold medal.”
