The 2024 season proved to be a great one for Italian tennis.
It was the first season in the sport's history in which as many as nine players
finished in the top-10 in men’s tennis. The most prominent player to finish in
the top-100 in men’s tennis in the world number one
Jannik Sinner.
The 23-year-old, who is regarded as one of the best players
currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category, finished the season at
the top of the ATP Rankings, more than 3,000 rating points ahead of the second-placed
Germany’s Alexander Zverev. Sinner won three major titles in 2024 in the
singles category.
He lifted the Australian Open after beating Russia’s Daniil
Medvedev in the final in a five-set thriller with a score of 3-6, 3-6, 6-4,
6-4, 6-3. He then lifted the US Open after beating America’s Taylor Fritz in the
final in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. Sinner’s last major title
in 2024 season was the ATP Finals on home soil after beating Fritz in the final
in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
While doing so, he become only the second player in the history of men’s tennis
to finish a full season without losing a match in straight sets.
The closest Italian player to Sinner in the ATP Rankings is Lorenzo
Musetti who finished the season on the 17th rank. He played 74
matches in the 2024 season, where he won 45 times and suffered 29 defeats.
However, he could not win a single title. Next in the list is Flavio Cobolli who
finished the season as the 32nd-ranked player in the world. The
22-year-old played 60 matches at the highest level in the year, winning 34
matches and suffering 26 defeats. The other Italian players to feature in the top
100 are Matteo Berrettini (34), Matteo Arnaldi (37), Luciano Darderi (44),
Lorenzo Sonego (53), Fabio Fognini (91) and Luca Nardi (92).
