American tennis player Reilly Opelka has criticized the ATP for their handling of the Peng Shuai situation, stating that the body has too many structural problems and conflicts of interest.
The World No.26 took to Twitter with a series of tweets aimed at the ATP, responding to a tweet by Jon Wertheim, a Sports Illustrated writer who criticized the ATP's response to the controversy surrounding Chinese player Peng Shuai.
“Hearing this again and again, ATP players of all tiers and ages support the WTA [on its stance with China],” wrote Wertheim.
“They are surprised/disenchanted by the invertebrate stance from the ATP. It’s largely the tournament board reps preventing a firmer response."
Opelka responded to Wertheim's tweet by posting the following statement “Throwback to when people got mad at me for complaining about the ATP and its conflicts of interest.”
Furthermore, the towering American took some shots at the structure of the ATP in general, highlighting what he considered to be a conflict of interest.
"This is our second conflict of interest,” Opelka said in another tweet.....“Not taking shots at Gavin [Forbes] here, just the structure of the ATP.”
