On Monday, the Swiss legend lost his points from 2020 Australian Open and dropped down through the ATP rankings to barely remain in the top-30.
The Swiss ace has been ranked inside the top 30 since October 2000. It's quite clear to everybody that that unbelievable streak will soon come to its end and probably would have before had the pandemic not happened. Thanks to the protected ranking system Federer was able to hold his position despite not playing due to an injury.
Federer is back at the gym and probably on the practice court, working on his physical strength and hoping to compete again in the second part of the season. It's unclear when he will return but initial reports suggested it will not be before Wimbledon. The grass slam is in doubt as well with many expecting Federer not to play.
Federer congratulated Rafael Nadal on his historic Australian Open win by joking that they both talked about being on crutches recently. That seems to indicate that the Swiss ace is still months away from any potential return.
