Lack of playing activity has caught up with Noami Osaka who dropped down to number 85 in the WTA rankings following the Australian Open.
Osaka was the defending champion at the event yet she lost in the 3rd round to Amanda Anisimova which caused her to lose a lot of points. The new WTA Rankings have Osaka on number 85 which is her lowest ranking since February 2018. Osaka was ranked 14th before the Australian Open but a lack of playing time and points from other events caused her to drop significantly.
Osaka was well aware of the implications her loss to Anisimova would have for her ranking but the Japanese player seemed unbothered by it after the match. She admitted it will be tough to rebuild it but also expressed readiness to tackle the challenge. It's not clear when Osaka will return as she declined to offer insight into her schedule going forward.
She is set to miss the WTA 1000 event in the Middle East in a few weeks along with Ashleigh Barty. The drop in the rankings also means that Osaka is no longer the Japanese number one as she was overtaken by Misaki Doi who is ranked 72nd.
