Patrick Mouratoglou had chances to watch both Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev closely as they both used his facilities in the south of France to train.
They also played a famous warm-up match there which was disclosed to the public but neither wanted to reveal who actually won the match. They both admitted it was a very high-intensity one which is understandable considering the competitive level of both players. During the Australian Open final, Mouratoglou tweeted something comparing the two players.
He said:
"The depth of Daniil’s shots reminds me of a certain… Novak Djokovic."
The depth of his shots were certainly an issue for Nadal who found himself oftentimes in a very weird spot trying to return them. It took some time for Nadal to understand his opponent better and find angles that Medvedev could not easily return. The Russian eventually wore down and Nadal was able to complete the comeback win.
Mouratoglou himself tweeted after the match:
"This final has been a summary of why Rafa has such a career. Incredible resilience, ability to readjust his tactics during the match and ability to win the fights making the difference in the big moments ! Congratulations."
