The top seed in Marseille,
Stefanos Tsitsipas is out of the event after getting beaten by
Roman Safiullin in straight sets 6-4 6-4.
A very poor day in the office was made worse for Tsitsipas when he had a terrible fall during the match where he was lucky to escape without injury. Tsitsipas nearly hit his head, hitting his shoulder pretty hard on the concrete surface below. Generally, it was a bad day for Tsitsipas who ran into a very inspired Safiullin today.
The Russian has a very tricky game that is very suited for indoor conditions. A good serve that is capable of doing a lot of damage was on display today as the Russian essentially dropped only a handful of points on his serve. Tsitsipas was not having a very good day serving hitting it at a measly 50 % rate which created a lot of chances for the Russian.
One break a piece in each set was all that Safiullin needed to win this match but he generally frustrated the Greek a lot in this match. He forced 13 break points converting only two of those but those two proved very crucial in a match where he only faced one. Safiullin served 7 aces in total en route to the 6-4 6-4 finish for the major upset win and the semifinal.
