It's been a very long wait for
Holger Rune who did not win a single match during July but found himself lucky getting
Benoit Paire in Washington 6-3 6-2.
The French player won his first-round match to advance to the 2nd round but he was unable to match the level of Rune who was desperate for a win. The Danish player certainly played like that and he finally got the win that was elusive for close to two months. Rune played 7 matches after his Tsitsipas match at Roland Garros and he lost 7 of them.
Six of them were early exits in various events on two different surfaces. A return to North American proved fruitful for the Danish player who as he was able to overcome Paire. It did not take a superb effort to overcome the French player but Rune played a solid match.
Both players were really strong behind their first serve but Rune was a bit better overall. He played the crucial rallies better saving the only break point he faced while also converting the break points Paire allowed him. That slight difference in serving made all the difference.
The 2nd set was quite similar as Rune once again did a lot of damage on the 2nd serve of Paire. The French player gave him plenty of chances though so it resulted in two breaks that were enough to win the set 6-2. A good win for Rune who needed it badly.
