Russia and Canada came with really young teams for the 2019 Davis Cup finals in Madrid, and both are very successful so far and will fight for the spot in the final.
The Canadian squad has a little advantage over Russia as they played their quarterfinal matches on Thursday.
Canada defeated Australia and therefore became the first country in the quarterfinals.
After victory over Australia, Vasek Pospisil said: “There’s nothing quite like Davis Cup, especially when you’re playing with guys like Denis, Felix [Auger-Aliassime] and Brayden [Schnur] in your team,” Pospisil said. “The chemistry in the locker room is amazing, it’s so much fun, and we’re playing for our country so there’s a lot on the line.”
Russia had a bit more difficult journey into the semifinals. First they faced Spain, with Rafael Nadal, in the group stage and in the quarterfinals they faced Serbia with Novak Djokovic. However, they were successful and defeated Serbia 2-1 to reach the semifinals. After the match, Andrey Rublev said:
“It's an amazing feeling to be part of this team, to play with them, now to be in semi-final with them after such a long time [since Russia last made this stage].”
