Welcome to the top 10: Rafael Jódar makes history as first player to achieve feat in debut season
ATP
Rafael Jódar will break into the ATP top 10 for the first time on Monday, becoming the first player to achieve the milestone during his debut season on the circuit. The 20-year-old Spaniard secured the historic breakthrough after Taylor Fritz lost to Valentin Vacherot in the Swiss Indoors Basel semi-finals, with the Monegasque winning 7-6(5), 6-3.
The result gave Jódar a remarkable reward just two days after his own campaign in Basel came to an end. He had lost a closely contested second-round match against Vacherot, going down 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(5), but the Swiss player subsequently eliminated Holger Rune and reached the semi-finals before overcoming Fritz.
Fritz had been the last player capable of preventing Jódar from entering the top 10 in the next ranking update. Had the American reached the Basel final, he would have moved ahead of the Spaniard, leaving Jódar at No. 11. Instead, Vacherot's victory opened the door for the Madrid native to achieve a milestone that seemed within reach for several months.
Jódar's rise has been one of the defining stories of the 2026 season. Having started the year outside the top 150, he has collected his first ATP title in Marrakech, reached the final in Washington and made a major breakthrough at the Masters 1000 level.
Jódar reaches top 10 after historic breakthrough season
The Spaniard's progress has been particularly striking given how quickly he established himself among the leading players. He broke into the top 100 in March, reached the top 50 the following month and climbed as high as No. 11 in August.
Although he narrowly missed an earlier opportunity to enter the top 10 after his strong run in Montreal, his results throughout the autumn eventually brought him within reach again.

At 20, Jódar will become the 21st Spanish player to reach the ATP top 10, joining a group that includes Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, David Ferrer and Juan Carlos Ferrero. He will also become the first player to achieve the breakthrough during his debut season, an exceptional distinction given the depth of competition on the current ATP Tour.
His achievement comes despite a disappointing finish in Basel. Jódar pushed Vacherot to a deciding-set tiebreak in their second-round encounter, recovering after losing the opening set and moving ahead in the third.
However, the Monegasque held his nerve in the closing stages, eventually winning 7-5 in the final tiebreak. Vacherot's subsequent victories over Rune and Fritz meant that the Spaniard's defeat did not prevent his ranking breakthrough.

Paris Masters offers Jódar another major challenge
Jódar's attention will now turn to the Paris Masters, where he is scheduled to begin against Alejandro Tabilo. The match will represent their fifth meeting of the season, with the Chilean winning their first encounter at Indian Wells before the Spaniard responded with three consecutive victories, including their latest meeting in Basel.

The Paris draw presents another opportunity for Jódar to strengthen his position among the world's leading players. He has already demonstrated his ability to compete consistently at the highest level, reaching the Shanghai Masters final earlier this month before his run ended against compatriot Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
His next objective will also involve the Race to Turin. Jódar has been fighting for a place at the ATP Finals, with the final qualification positions still under pressure from several established names. Reaching the top 10 is already a historic achievement, but a strong performance in Paris could help him secure another major milestone before the end of his breakthrough campaign.
