The Russian team was successful at the start of the inaugural ATP Cup as they defeated Italy after Khachanov and Medvedev won their matches.
It was a terrible start for Khachanov in Perth. He was losing already 5-2 40-30 to Travaglia in the first set. But despite facing a set point, the young Russian did not give up and fought for the set. He was successful in doing so as he leveled the score and gained a late lead to win the set 7-5. In the second set, Khachanov had no more problems when he defeated Travaglia 6-3 in 37 minutes and secured a 1-0 lead for the Russian team.
The second match between Russia and Italy featured two players from TOP 15.
Daniil Medvedev played Fabio Fognini in a quick 3-set match. Again, the beginning was not good for Russians. Medvedev lost the first set 1-6 and Team Russia was hoping for another comeback.
World number 5, Medvedev was almost flawless on his service in the second set and managed to win up to 63% of points after Fognini's first service what was a key to an easy 6-1 victory. Medvedev maintained the high-level of play also in the third set to earn the second point for his team. Next, Russia will meet the USA
who lost to Norway earlier in Perth.
