The not-very-tall Argentinian is known for his great skill on the clay. He proved that many times by winning numerous titles on this surface. Moreover, Schwartzman showed why everybody fears him on the clay yesterday when
he defeated 12-time Roland Garros champion, Rafael Nadal. Today, he continued in a similar style also against Denis Shapovalov.
The young Canadian was also in a very good form in Rome and so everybody expected a great semifinal match. The first set of the semifinal match was a great spectacle, but nobody knew that there is much more to come. Schwartzman has won the opener 6-4 to get an early lead in the match.
However, the drama started in the second set. Shapovalov broke his opponent and had another 2 break point opportunities to lead already 5-2. But he failed to do that and Schwartzman soon leveled the score to 5-5. The young Canadian didn't give up and broke Schwartzman one more time to win the second set 7-5.
At the beginning of the third set, the match was already entering its third hour, and a great spectacle was just about to begin. Fans could see a total of 15 breakpoints out of which 6 were converted and both players got really close to winning the match.
However, the set reached the tie-break where we also saw 8 mini-breaks in 11 rallies. In the end,
Diego Schwartzman prevailed to win the match 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(4) in three hours and 13 minutes to set up the final against
Novak Djokovic.
