Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman has hit a new low in his career after suffering a defeat in the qualifying round Western & Southern Cincinnati Open.
The 30-year-old suffered a defeat in the qualifier of the competition against Russia’s Alexander Shevchenko with a score of 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
The defeat ended Schwartzman’s run of consecutive 52 main draw appearances in the ATP competitions.
The result was a severe blow for Schwartzman who would be hoping to have a longer run in the competition in order to prepare for the upcoming US Open.
The fourth and final Grand Slam of the year is set to begin in less than 20 days’ time in New York.
The former world number eight has a decent record while playing at the US Open where he played in the quarterfinal twice — in 2017 and later in 2019.
However, on both occasions, he was on the losing side. On his first appearance in the last-eight of the mega-evet, Schwartzman lost to Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta with a score of 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
Two years later, he lost to the former world number one Spain’s Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinal with a score of 6-4, 7-5, 6-2.
