Alex de Minaur has revealed that he is planning on watching the Australia Vs. England World Cup semi-final with girlfriend
Katie Boulter, as he prepares for his first ATP 1000 final at the National Bank
Canadian Open in Toronto.
Australian player de Minaur has had a fairytale run at the Masters 1000 event in Canada. As an unseeded player, he defeated the likes of Cameron Norrie and second-seed Daniil Medvedev to reach the semi-finals.
Once there, the 24-year-old won against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. He will now go on to play his maiden final at this level on the ATP Tour, where he will face seventh seed Jannik Sinner.
de Minaur plans to watch World Cup after his match
Outside of tennis, de Minaur has revealed his excitement about his home nation of Australia reaching the semi-final of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. The Matildas defeated France on penalties to reach this stage of the tournament for the first time in its team's history.
"It's amazing. It's huge, especially playing at home and the amount of crowd support they're being able to bring to these matches and just the excitement," he said.
This could be a good way for de Minaur to relax after his own competition, but it could be made tenser by the fact that he will be watching it with his girlfriend, British tennis player Boulter, who being from England will likely be supporting Australia's rivals in the semi-final. The Lionesses progressed through their quarter-final match after a 2-1 win against Colombia.
"Look, they got the deciding penalty. I think it was yesterday? Yeah. And now they're in the semi-finals of the World Cup, and I believe they play England; right? So I've got something to kind of watch with Katie and, hopefully, the Matildas get the win as well," he added.
De Minaur says his own job is not done
In terms of his own important match, de Minaur said:
"Well, it feels great. It feels like, you know, all the hard work, all the hours on the court, off the court, they're paying off. It's good to see those results.
"Because a lot of times you put in all this effort and hard work and the results just don't come; right? So it's always a huge boost of confidence when you're able to go on these deep runs. But, you know, I get to play a final tomorrow. And, you know, the job is not done. Keep on going."
