Australian Federal Senator Babet has congratulated Serbia’s
legendary tennis star
Novak Djokovic after winning his 24th Grand
Slam title.
The 36-year-old achieved that feat after winning the
recently concluded
US Open 2023 where he defeated the current world number
three Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the final in straight sets with a score of
6-3, 7-6, 6-3.
Babet, in a post on his official account on X — previously known
as Twitter — congratulated the current world number one for equaling the record
of the great Margaret Court.
“Congratulations to Novak Djokovic, Serbia's greatest
athlete. Congratulations on equalling our own Margaret Court's grand slam
record, and thank you for reminding us that humility, conviction and courage in
the face of bullying and intimidation can, in the end, win through,” Babet
wrote.
Court remains perhaps the greatest women’s singles player in
the history of tennis in the Open era, having won 24 Grand Slam titles.
Her most successful competition was the Australian Open
where she ended up lifting the title 11 times.
Just like her, Djokovic’s most successful competition is also
the Australian Open where he has clinched the title 10 times.
With that victory, the Belgrade-born ended the season on a high
after winning three out of the four Grand Slams this year.
His only defeat in a major tournament this year came in the
final of Wimbledon where he came second-best in a five-set thriller against
Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz with a score of 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4.
