Stefanos Tsitsipas kicked off his
Australian Open campaign with a late-night match versus
Gilles Simon and he was sensational winning in straight sets.
It took the Greek about an hour and a half to defeat Gilles Simon in round 1 of the Australian Open in straight sets 6-1 6-2 6-1. The Greek came out furious playing a very aggressive style of play looking to end rallies quickly. Simon could not handle all that early pressure so he found himself down 3-0 quickly. Stefanos continued to apply the pressure and he cruised to a 6-1 opening set victory. He hit 9 winners to 5 errors dropping only 4 points on his serve en route to the easy victory.
The strong display continued in the 2nd set as well with Simon trying to match his opponent in aggressive play. It didn't go well for the Frenchman as he piled up 10 errors to only 3 winners which gave Tsitsipas more than enough to secure it 6-2. The Greek himself commited 12 unforced errors to 9 winners because of the shift of style by Simon but it didn't matter much.
The third set once again followed the well-established script with Simon struggling even more especially on his serve. He racked up 3 double faults early in the set to give Stefanos the 3-1 lead which grew to a 5-1 lead as Simon reached 10 unforced errors. Stefanos ultimately closed it out with 6-1.
