Although she has been playing competitive tennis for over two decades, former World No.1 Andy Roddick believes that Serena Williams is not ready to retire yet and still has a passion for the sport.
Williams, who turned 40 a few months ago, missed the second half of the 2021 season due to a hamstring injury sustained at Wimbledon. However, the 23-time Grand Slam champion hopes to return at next year's Australian Open, with the goal of winning a record-tying 24th Major title.
"She has a great support system," Roddick said during an appearance on the Tennis Channel. "It's not surprising to see Serena fully committed and aggressive in something else besides tennis.
"That's going to be her calling card forever. Doesn't matter if it is tennis, or business, or anything else. I assure you she would not be sticking around just to be a ceremonial player. She will not enter events until she thinks that she can still win them."
The 2003 US Open champion believes Williams has a lot left in the tank, adding that she is confident she can still win tournaments.
"She s not going to be the one that's out there satisfied with making a semifinal, making a quarterfinal," explained Roddick. "She is out there to win. I hope she is healthy enough to get that chance."
