Former player Pam Shriver joined the fight to end the toxic culture of sexual relationships between WTA players and their coaches, a common thing according to reports.
There have been multiple cases in the past few years of current and former players talking about their relationships with coaches. Shriver herself came out with her story about how she was a 5-year long relationship with her coach that started when she was 17 and he was 50. She has called on more protection for players:
“Having seen so many generations of women players struggle with the same thing, I really want women players to have more agency over the separation of their personal life from their professional life. There has been such an acceptance that this happens. That has to switch to ‘no, it can’t happen’."
She wants the grand slam events to step up on the matter too:
"I would like see the four majors, which together have 12 important weeks of the calendar, to step up and be better leaders on this thing. I think there are some real opportunities to make inroads."
