A crazy match happened between
Jessica Pegula and
Simona Halep in Toronto and it saw the Romanian win it 2-6 6-3 6-4.
Halep did not start well in this one as Pegula was smothering the ball incredibly well at the start of the match. Halep resorted to counter punching but it was highly unproductive as the American simply continued blasting winners. Rather quickly it was 6-2 for Pegula who seemed quite comfortable in this matchup.
It wouldn't last long as Halep was able to take an early 2-0 lead despiting facing a 15-40 deficit in the first game. Simona lost her serve at 2-0 to make it 2-1 but broke her opponent once more for the 3-1 and then 4-1 lead. Halep had to fend off a couple of more break points but managed to stay on top and secure the 2nd set with 6-3.
The final set was another interesting one as Halep broke Pegula once more for the 1-0 lead. The American was attacking but Halep was able to get enough balls back to force an error from the American. Pegula broke back to make it 1-1 and saved a break point to take a 2-1 lead. She had a 40-0 advantage on Halep's serve in the next game but failed to use it as Simona held it for 2-2.
The Romanian then jumped out to a 5-2 double break lead but Pegula was able to battle back to 5-4 while saving two match points. Eventually, Halep got another one on her serve at 5-4 and finished it off with 6-4.
