Hubert Hurkacz will play in the Montreal final after beating Casper Ruud in the semifinal 5-7 6-3 6-2.
The Polish player opened the match very well breaking Ruud early to take a 3-0 lead but Ruud was able to battle back and make it 3-3. From there, players largely settled into a nice rhythm and neither had any chances. Ruud got another chance towards the end of the set and he took it for the 6-5 lead. Playing well he closed it out 7-5.
The 2nd set opened with Ruud taking an early 1-0 lead seemingly starting his march towards the final. He played a lacklustre game next to drop his serve and give Hurkacz some hope. The Pole started to play much more aggressively, especially with his backhand that absorbed Ruud's forehand rather well. He was able to jump out to a 4-2 lead and saved two break points to hold it 5-2.
From there it was a rather simple finish to take it 6-3. The final set opened with Ruud having a 40-0 lead in his first service game but he allowed Hubert to make it to 40-40. Showing nerves the Norwegian gave Hurkacz a few break points and the Pole took them. He would add another break later on for the 4-0 lead looking very comfortable.
It was a spectacular comeback considering he really did not serve that well for the majority of this match. Hurkacz finished off the match 6-2.
