Simona Halep thrashes Donna Vekic in Toronto opener

Simona Halep got her Toronto campaign underway with a commanding win over Donna Vekic leaving her only a handful of games 6-0 6-2.

Halep got a pretty decent draw as she got Vekic who entered the draw as a lucky loser. The Croatian lost to Muhammad in the qualifiers yesterday but it was a good battle and lengthy match that left her drained. She was unable to produce any kind of good effort today as Halep quickly steamrolled her.

Halep did not serve that well but she dominated from the baseline. She won all points when Vekic missed her first serve and even on her first serve the Croatian was bad. Halep simply dominated from the baseline dropping only 3 points when returning and five when serving.

The set finished with a bagel and the 2nd set wasn't much different. Vekic did not allow a bagel again as she won her first service game in the set despite being down 15-40. Halep continued applying heavy pressure on Vekic but the Croatian was handling a bit better.

There was no hope of a comeback however as the Romanian finished off the match 6-2. A good start for Halep who has high hopes for this part of the season.
