Jannik Sinner outlasted Alexander Zverev at the Roland Garros and advanced to his first career Grand Slam quarterfinal.
Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev played their 4th round Roland Garros match with a lot of people wondering who might come out on top. Zverev played some stellar matches and some not so much and Sinner has looked sharp from the start. The start of the match went largely in the favour of the Italian who played a smart brand of tennis allowing him to win the set despite racking up 17 unforced errors compared to only 9 by Zverev. He saved all 5 break points he allowed and converted the only one Zverev gave him for a 6-3 1st set victory.
He won the 2nd set with the same result (6-3) but this time he was helped by Zverev who didn't play as good as in the first. He had fewer winners and more errors than Sinner who served much better not allowing a single breakpoint in the set. Zverev came out strong for the next set which he won 6-4 after a lengthy battle in it. Both players committed quite a few errors but Zverev was better in key moments which allowed him to win it.
He didn't carry that momentum into the 4th set as Sinner broke him immediately at the start to take a 3-0 lead. Zverev composed himself enough to hold his serve in the next two service games but he was also largely uninspired when Sinner served. That allowed the Italian to cruise to a 6-3 4th set victory clinching the stunning victory over the favoured German.
