Alexander Zverev is through to the third round of the 2024
French Open and is looking very good as he continues his progression through by taking down
David Goffin 7-6, 6-2, 6-2 after his match against Rafael Nadal earlier this week.
That courted all of the headlines, but it was back to the grind as such and winning with less pressure this time around as Zverev looked superb. It is a 90th career Grand Slam win for Zverev with 30 of them coming at the French Open.
The German will want to show that the comments about him potentially not having the bottle to win the title by Rennae Stubbs are wide of the mark. He is one of the favourites this fortnight after winning in Rome and the other top names faltering.
Albeit it was a tight opener for Zverev as he got better and better as the match continued. He took the tie-break 7-4 after Goffin had more than matched him in the opening exchanges. It went basically entirely with serve, but Zverev found a way to out muscle the Belgian in the second set claiming it to 6-2 to stamp his authority and eradicate a slow start.
Albeit this was despite multiple incidents happening on the court with a roof leak causing a delay and also him having a difference of opinion with the umpire going into Set Three. But in the end, Zverev didn't let that affect him and it didn't give Goffin fuel. Zverev and Goffin were locked in at 2-2 in the final set but the German sped away after having early resolve. He outclassed Goffin in two hours and 23 minutes as his title tilt continues to gain momentum.
Novak Djokovic continues to head towards the third round himself on Court Philippe-Chatrier and there seems to finally be movement and a better forecast for outside courts. Albeit with a lot of matches still to get through today it will be a race against time and cancellations again are likely.
