Jan-Lennard Struff will face Frances Tiafoe in the Stuttgart Open final after they defeated their opponents in the semi-final of the event on Saturday.
Frances Tiafoe was the first player on the courts and he avenged fellow American Taylor Fritz who lost to Fucsovics in the previous round. This one was an interesting one as the American took the opening set thanks to some impressive and smart play. He didn't have as many winners as Fucsovics and he had one unforced error more but he still managed to win the set.
There was just a lot of cat-and-mouse play which Tiafoe does really well. He didn't face a single break point and used one of two to cruise to a 6-3 finish. The second set was much harder for the American as he only got it done in the tiebreak. It was an epic scoreline of 13-11. Both players were spectacular as neither faced a single break point. They were a combined 44/49 behind their first serve.
Still, Fucsovics had chances, six of them. He wasted six set points in the set allowing Tiafoe to use his first match point to get it done. The second semi-final was also quite exciting as we saw Struff battle Hurkacz. The Polish player is a really great grass player but Struff proved a bit better in this one.
The German lost the opening set 6-3 but rallied to win in three sets. The score in the second and third set was 6-3 6-3. Both players played spectacular posting 30+ winners with not a lot of errors. Hurkacz also had 21 aces but it wasn't enough. The trophy will be significant for Both Tiafoe and Struff as the former could become a top 10 player if he wins the trophy. The German would love to add one on native soil.
