Nick Kyrgios played a very good match against Daniil Medvedev and he admitted to being proud because of it despite missing some decent chances.
It took Daniil Medvedev four sets to defeat Nick Kyrgios yet the Australian had a very decent chance at the start of the 4th set to make things even more interesting. After a brilliant finish to the 3rd set which Kyrgios won with 6-4, he had break points early in the 4th but he failed to use them. He faltered after that and Medvedev was able to escape in four sets.
Speaking on the match, Nick said:
“I'm super proud of my performance today. From where I was with my struggles the last four, five months, to be feeling like this…I'm just proud of the way I responded.”
Kyrgios did not have the ideal warm-up to the year as he contracted COVID which did not allow him to play a single match before the Slam. At times during the match, Kyrgios looked tired which was expected considering it was only his 2nd match since September. On the lack of matches he said:
“No matter how little I train or how much I play, I'll always lift for matches like this. I'm not going to shy away from it. Obviously, I'm not happy with drawing Daniil Medvedev [in the] second round because my ranking slipped. If I play 95 per cent of people tonight on that court, I think I win, to be honest with you."
He finished up with:
“That's just the way it is. I'm just proud of the way I carried myself. I fought, I gave a good show, and that's it. I'm not thinking about my next tournaments or anything like that.”
