Semifinal Triumph (Taylor's Version) 🇺🇸🙌 @Taylor_Fritz97 sends Team USA into the #UnitedCup final with an unassailable 3-0 lead over Team Poland.
It's been a dream week for Team USA, as Taylor Fritz won the third straight rubber match in their best-of-five series with Poland to send the Americans into the finals of the inaugural United Cup.
Fritz was in superb form during his 7-6(5) 7-6(5) win over Hurkacz, matching the Polish star's power from the baseline. Both superstars realized the importance of their encounter, with Poland needing to win in order to keep their hopes of reaching the final alive.
Team USA had establish a 2-0 lead following an impressive win by Jessica Pegula over World No.1 Iga Swiatek, and Frances Tiafoe defeating Kacper Zuk. With everything to play for, Hurkacz came out swinging at the start of the match, but was unable to overcome Fritz's dogged determination. The American won 26 of 28 points behind his first serve in the opening set, and neither player could capitalize on a break point. A tiebreak ensued, which saw Fritz prevail as nerves overcame his polish counterpart towards the end.
The second set saw Hurkacz try to dominate behind a barrage of aces, the lanky Pole hit 10 aces to just 3 by his opponent. However, he was once again unable to break the Fritz serve, leading to a second tiebreak. Despite obtaining a mini-break to lead 5-4, Hurkacz was again unable to close out the match. Fritz battled back, and sealed victory for the Americans after an hour and 44 minutes.
Team USA will now await the winner between Italy and Greece, with the Italians having a 2-0 lead over their Greek counterparts. Although the Americans still have a women's match and a mixed doubles clash ahead, the results are irrelevant due to their 3-0 lead and both teams will be playing solely for national pride.
