Taylor Fritz added another win against Denis Shapovalov to thier ever-growing list of encounters beating him in straight sets 6-4 6-4 in Miami.
The first opened up with both players playing really well. We dind0t see anything special from either player but they were getting it done by keeping their serve. Shapovalov risked quite a bit more in rallies going for it but for the most part, he was able to hold his own pretty well against Fritz. The American was far more calculated in his approach and ultimately it worked.
Shapovalov basically gave away the first set because he started too many so many mistakes. His serve became erratic as well and he ultimately finished with six double faults. It came as Shapovalov risked far too much. He did hit 7 aces but those errors ultimately cost him as they were part of the 10 unforced ones. Fritz only had four and that along with 9 winners was enough.
The second set opened with Fritz being quite solid overall while Shapovalov continue to struggle a bit. He got broken fairly early in the second set but avoided falling behind by two breaks after saving some break points down 1-3. He served a bit better but still remained the more aggressive player trying to win points as opposed to waiting for a mistake.
It didn't quite work as Fritz was able to keep his composure and more important the break advantage finishing off the match 6-4. A good overall performance by Fritz with a couple of aces and a decent amount of winners and very few unforced errors.
