The 26-year-old had a horrendous outing in the ATP 1000
event in Monaco where he was knocked out after losing in the round of 64 to
Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4. With that defeat, Fritz is now set to lose the US number one
spot as well to young Ben Shelton once his last year’s semifinal points come off next week.
Shelton has recently won the ATP 250 title in Houston where
he defeated fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the final with a score of 7-5,
4-6, 6-3. This is Fritz’s third first-round exit in the last four
events this season. Previously, he was knocked out of the competition after
losing his first match against Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild with a score of
6-3, 6-4.
Before that, he also crashed out of the Mexican Open after
losing to Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi in the round of 32 with a score of 6-4, 4-6,
6-3. Fritz’s best appearance in the 2024 season came in the
Delray Beach Open where he finished as the champion after beating fellow
American Tommy Paul in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-3.
