Casper Ruud had to dig deep to defeat a very bouncy Jack Sock 6-4 5-7 10-7 but he was able to secure the win in the match tiebreak to give Europe the 1-0 lead.
It was a good match that lasted almost two hours and it saw Sock give Ruud a lot of trouble. The Norwegian nearly lost this match but was able to secure it in the end. It did start well for him as he jumped out to an early 3-0 lead.
The surface does not play that fast and Sock had some trouble adjusting early. He did find some good success later on breaking Ruud when the Norwegian relaxed a bit. In the very next game, Ruud had set points but he only used the 4th to clinch the opening set.
The 2nd set featured much better play by Sock as he didn't allow a single break point in the entire set. Ruud was unable to do the same as he gave Sock some late break points and he used them to break the Norwegian and then close out the set 7-5.
The final set was a match tiebreak as all deciders will be and Sock stunned the crowd by taking an early 3-0 lead. Ruud was able to battle back after some poor mistakes by Sock and eventually he was able to put the ball really deep forcing some more mistakes by Ruud. In the end, it was enough for a 10-7 victory.
