Dominic Thiem didn't need to play three sets to advance from the first round of the 2020 US Open as his opponent withdrew already after the second.

But it was not an easy job for the Austrian. Jaume Munar was giving him a great fight as the first set reached the tie-break and took more than an hour. However, the Spaniard needed to pull out after losing the second set and so Thiem advanced to the second round. After the match, he said:
“I was happy with the way I was fighting, because it wasn’t easy to play him,” said Thiem in an on-court interview. “The courts are very different this year, the court seemed to be slow inside (on Louis Armstrong stadium). It was a little bit windy, but we had some good rallies. I felt I was playing good. I played a good tie-break, which was pretty comfortable, then I’m sorry for what has happened.”
