Novak Djokovic did not have his best tennis in the semifinal vs Shapovalov but the Serbian was able to squeeze out the win and he spoke about it after the match.
Djokovic was very lucky to escape with the first set after trailing for the majority of it. He was able to force a tiebreak but played it poorly only to saved by Shapovalov who played even worse. In the 2nd set, Djokovic was once again lucky to escape with it as Shpovalov wasted many chances to take a lead.
Djokovic spoke honestly about being lucky saying:
“I don’t think that the scoreline says enough about the performance and about the match. He was serving for the first set and he was probably the better player for most of the second set. He had many chances and I would like to give him a big round of applause for everything that he has done today and these two weeks.”
The Serbian is now one win away from the record-tying 20th Grand Slam which would give him the same amount of Grand Slam trophies as Federer and Nadal. Asked about his relentless playstyle that saw him save 10 of 11 break points he faced, he said:
“There is no holding back once you step out on the court, particularly in the later stages of an event that I always dreamt of winning. The dream keeps going. I am trying to take out the maximum of my own abilities every single match and see what happens. Giving up is never an option.”
Djokovic will face Matteo Berrettini in the final whom he beat at the French Open not long ago.
