Spain’s
Carlos Alcaraz has seen a huge boom in his social
media following after his recent triumph at
Wimbledon 2023.
The 20-year-old defeated Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic in the
final of the third Grand Slam of the year in a five-set thriller with a score
of 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4 on Sunday.
That result has an instant impact on Alcaraz’s Instagram account
where it witnessed an increase of more than 1 million followers in the next 48
hours, thus making him the fourth most followed active tennis player on the app
after Spain’s Rafael Nadal, Djokovic and Australia’s Nick Kyrgios.
The result was indeed a special one considering that before
this year, the current world number one never played in the quarterfinal or
beyond in the competition.
His best outing before this year came in 2022 where he was
knocked out from the fourth round after suffering a defeat against Italy’s Jannik
Sinner with a score of 6-1, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.
On the other hand, the defeat ended Djokovic’s dream run of 34
victories in the competition during which he won four back-to-back titles.
Before Sunday, his last defeat was in the 2017 edition of
the tournament where he was forced to retire from the quarterfinal clash
because of an arm injury.
